The gradient recalled echo MRI sequence generates gradient echoes as a consequence of echo refocusing. The initial slice selective RF pulse applied to the tissue is less than 90° (typically rotation angles are between 10° and 90°). Immediately after this RF pulse, the spins begin to dephase.
Instead of a refocusing 180° RF pulse, reversing the gradient polarity produces a gradient echo. A negative phase encoding gradient and a dephasing frequency encoding gradient are used simultaneous. The switch on of the frequency encoding gradient produces an echo caused by refocusing of the dephasing, which is caused by the dephasing gradient.
TR and flip angle together control the T1, and TE control T2* weighting.

In Phase Image
 
The term in phase refers to an image in which the signals from two spectral components (such as fat and water) add constructively in a voxel. T1 weighted in phase images are acquired by a gradient echo-based technique with a short TR, TE and a high flip angle greater than 60 degrees. To some degree, in phase sequences are more sensitive to detection of focal hepatic lesions than out of phase for evaluating reduced lesion-to-liver contrast, but the choice for a T1 gradient echo sequence is still based on field strength, advanced imaging techniques (breath hold imaging), and physician preference.

Multiple echoes acquired in a gradient echo scan are combined into an image, for less artifacts and higher SNR; the early echoes provide increased SNR, whilst later echoes boost contrast. This sequence type is also known as MERGE (Multiple Echo Recombined Gradient Echo)

(MEDIC) MEDIC is a heavily T2* weighted spoiled gradient echo sequence with multiple echoes. MEDIC uses a series of identically phase encoded gradient echoes, sampled per line in k-space. Unipolar frequency encoding gradients are used to achieve flow compensation and to avoid off resonance effects. For each echo the magnitude images are reconstructed and postprocessed by using a sum of squares algorithm to improve the signal to noise ratio. The increased receiver bandwidth reduces the T2* effects and impairment of the spatial resolution.
The multi echo data image combination sequence is potentially useful in imaging of cartilage in joints.
