Remove the metal
Ferromagnetic metal will cause a magnetic field inhomogeneity, which in turn causes a local signal void, often accompanied by an area of high signal intensity, as well as a distortion of the image. They create their own magnetic field and dramatically alter precession frequencies of protons in the adjacent tissues. Tissues adjacent to ferromagnetic components become influenced by the induced magnetic field of the metal hardware rather than the parent field and, therefore, either fail to precess or do so at a different frequency and hence do not generate useful signal. Two components contribute to susceptibility artifact, induced magnetism in the ferromagnetic component itself and induced magnetism in protons adjacent to the component.
Artifacts from metal may have varied appearances on MRI scans due to different type of metal or configuration of the piece of metal. The biocompatibility of metallic alloys, stainless steel, cobalt chrome and titanium alloy is based on the presence of a constituent element within the alloy that has the ability to form an adherent oxide coating that is stable, chemically inert and hence biocompatible. In relation to imaging titanium alloys are less ferromagnetic than both cobalt and stainless steel, induce less susceptibility artifact and result in less marked image degradation.

Porphyrins occur naturally in plants and animals. All porphyrin molecules feature an aromatic macrocycle ring with a central binding site. This site accommodates transition metals, which are held in place by inward-facing nitrogen atoms. Metalloporphyrins have usually a low toxicity and a potential of a selective uptake in tumors or necrosis. These properties are advantageous for a use as MRI tumor specific agents with positive enhancement. These contrast agents enhance tumors on T1 weighted sequences, which are isointense to surrounding tissues. Porphyrin-based compounds have also necrosis avid properties; they can depict the extent of myocardial infarction as defined by histopathology.
Metalloporphyrins are also used in photodynamic therapy of tumors. The compounds contain a 'lone star' metal atom at the center of the ring and are 'bigger than the average porphyrin'. They contain five N atoms in the central chelating core and this allows them to form complexes with large trivalent lanthanide metals, which have useful cancer therapy properties.

(McAb) Monoclonal antibodies are used for tumor detection and localization in nuclear medicine. In MRI, monoclonal antibodies labeled with paramagnetic or superparamagnetic particles are being studied for targeting tumors, for example contrast agent containing gadolinium attached to a targeting antibody. The antibody would bind to a specific target (e.g., a metastatic melanoma cell) while the gadolinium would increase the MRI signal. Further developments are MRI contrast agents that specifically target glucose receptors on tumor cells; coupled with the high spatial resolution of high field MRI devices, these agents have potentials to detect small tumor foci.
The monoclonal antibody manufacturers produce a wide variety of ligands, which can be directed against a multiplicity of pathologic molecular targets. MRI enhanced with targeted contrast agents can be used for molecular imaging.

Multi Echo Imaging
 
Multi echo imaging sequences use a series of echoes acquired as a train following after a single excitation pulse. Multiple symmetrical or asymmetrical echoes can be acquired, typically T2 weighted. In spin echo imaging, each echo is formed by a 180° pulse, but also a FSE (TSE, RARE) or EPI sequence can be used. As a difference to a normal fast spin echo sequence, in multi echo imaging, separate images are produced from each echo of the train with different T2 weightings. The signal height reduces with transverse relaxation. This drop in signal can be used to calculate a pure T2 image.
