A saddle coil has a cylindrical body, with one or more turns of wire (older versions) or foil (newer versions) on each side. It generates a very homogenous field in the direction of its long axis. To achieve a higher B1 homogeneity there are different developments like Folded Litz-foil Saddle Coils or Etched Litz-foil Saddle Coils.

A surface coil is essentially a loop of conducting material, such as copper tubing. The in-bore solenoidal sending coil is used as the transmitter of RF energy. This type of receiver coil is placed directly on or over the region of interest for increased magnetic sensitivity. The loop may form various shapes and be bent slightly to conform to the imaged body part. Surface coils have a good SNR for tissues adjacent to the coil and because the signal decrease with the distance, an eligibility homogeneity correction will equalize this over the field of view. A rule of thumb for surface coils is that the sensitivity decreases appreciably beyond a distance equal to the diameter of the coil.
The positioning of the coil is an important determinant of performance. As only the region close to the surface coil will contribute to the signal, there is an improvement in the SNR for these regions, compared to the use of receiver coils that surround the appropriate part of the body. These coils are specifically designed for localized body regions, and provide improved signal to noise ratios by limiting the spatial extent of the excitation or reception.

Phantom
 
An artificial object of known size and composition that is imaged to test, adjust or monitor an MRI systems homogeneity, imaging performance and orientation aspects. A phantom is usually a fluid-filled container or bottle often filled with a plastic structure of various sizes and shapes.

Coherent gradient echo sequences can measure the free induction decay (FID), generated just after each excitation pulse or the echo formed prior to the next pulse. Coherent gradient echo sequences are very sensitive to magnetic field inhomogeneity. An alternative to spoiling is to incorporate residual transverse magnetization directly into the longitudinal steady state. These GRE sequences use a refocusing gradient in the phase encoding direction during the end module to maximize remaining transverse (xy) magnetization at the time when the next excitation is due, while the other two gradients are, in any case, balanced.
When the next excitation pulse is sent into the system with an opposed phase, it tilts the magnetization in the -a direction. As a result the z-magnetization is again partly tilted into the xy-plane, while the remaining xy-magnetization is tilted partly into the z-direction.
A fully refocused sequence with a properly selected and uniform f would yield higher signal, especially for tissues with long T2 relaxation times (high water content) so it is used in angiographic, myelographic or arthrographic examinations and is used for T2* weighting. The repetition time for this sequence has to be short. With short TR, coherent GE is also useable for breath hold and 3D technique. If the repetition time is about 200 msec there's no difference between spoiled or unspoiled GE. T1 weighting is better with spoiled techniques.
The common types include GRASS, FISP, FAST, and FFE.
The T2* component decreases with long TR and short TE. The T1 time is controlled by flip angle. The common TR is less than 50 ms and the common TE less than 15 ms
Other types have stronger T2 dependence but lower SNR. They include SSFP, CE-FAST, PSIF, and CE-FFE-T2.
Examples of fully refocused FID sequences are TrueFISP, bFFE and bTFE.

Imaging coils are radio frequency coils used in magnetic resonance imaging for sending and/or receiving electromagnetic radiation. Several MR imaging coils in different shapes and sizes are necessary for different body parts and to handle individual applications.
For Example:
Birdcage coils provide high homogeneity and good signal to noise ratio (SNR) in brain MRI scans.
Surface coils with small coil diameter and higher SNR enable to image the temporomandibular joints (TMJ).
The implemented body coil allows the scanning of body parts with large field of views.
Micro coils are available to image finger joints.
High performance phased array coils are today state-of-the-art for a wide range of applications from head, spine, knee or shoulder to cardiac MRI.
