Perflubron® is a perfluorochemical for use as an oral contrast agent. Due to its insolubility in water it does not mix with intestinal secretions; thus bowel lumina appear homogeneously dark on MR images when Perflubron® replaces bowel contents. Filled bowel loops appear black with all pulse sequences because the contrast agent lacks mobile protons.
It is commercially available as Imagent GI. Because rapid transit through the gastrointestinal tract it reaches the rectum within 30 to 40 minutes in most patients. MR imaging of the upper abdominal region should begin within 15 minutes and of the pelvic region 15 to 60 minutes after ingestion of perflubron.

Trace Image
 
In trace images, the contrast is generated by the direction of the diffusion tensor. This parametric images contains the average of the three eigenvalues (independent of the frame of reference).

Image Quality
 
The quality of magnetic resonance imaging is particularly dependent on image resolution (matrix, field of view, slice thickness), contrast (TE, TR), signal to noise ratio (bandwidth, signal averaging) and lack of artifacts. These MRI parameters are affected by the field homogeneity, the field strength, the coil, the pulse sequence type and imaging techniques like parallel imaging.

Modulus Image
 
Modulus images acquired with an Inversion Recovery Sequence do not take negative magnetization spin values into account. The "real" image, displayed with a bright background is recommended for correct tissue contrast.

In Phase Image
 
The term in phase refers to an image in which the signals from two spectral components (such as fat and water) add constructively in a voxel. T1 weighted in phase images are acquired by a gradient echo-based technique with a short TR, TE and a high flip angle greater than 60 degrees. To some degree, in phase sequences are more sensitive to detection of focal hepatic lesions than out of phase for evaluating reduced lesion-to-liver contrast, but the choice for a T1 gradient echo sequence is still based on field strength, advanced imaging techniques (breath hold imaging), and physician preference.
