Geometric distortion
Dear Listers,

I have some questions about the image distortions in MRI:

1) Are the magnetic field inhomogeneities the only cause of image distortions? Does RF-inhomogeneities cause distortions or just signal inaccuracies?

2) Is it accurate to say that a spiral sequence would not have distortion due to magnetic field inhomogeneity(, but it would have blurring). Would there be image geometric distortions with a spiral imaging?

thank you very much in advance

The above statements are correct, also remember that the portal vein is brightest in the first pass of contrast through it so having a short sequence for the arterial phase <20 seconds and going straight into the portal phase is important(ie one inspiration/expiration only between repeating the sequence). The portal vein will become brightest within 30 seconds of the artery.

Black Blood MRA
The black blood effect is a natural high contrast between blood and myocardium caused by the flow void of blood. Black blood techniques are for example used to demonstrate fatty infiltration of the right ventricular wall with right ventricular dysplasia. Black blood MRA is usual based on fast spin echo or inversion recovery sequences and seldom used as cine imaging. The advantage of this type of sequence consists of being less sensitive to respiratory and cardiac motion. Bright blood cine imaging is the standard method, but there are manufacturer with different techniques, e.g. Toshiba has a black blood cine technique.
