NAME
Corrupted data
DESCRIPTION
Incorrectly interpretation or display
REASON
Corrupted data
HELP
Save to a new or different media
An artifact on a MR image can appear when data read off an optical disc became corrupted. There two effects can be seen.
Firstly, Bands where the intensity has been incorrectly interpreted or secondly areas, where the horizontal position of the pixels has been incorrectly displayed. It is important to be able to differentiate between artifacts caused during a MRI scan, from those caused by the associated hardware of an imaging system.

Image Guidance
Review the hardware and store the images on a new disc.

NAME
Receiver turn on
DESCRIPTION
Line across the center of the image
REASON
Combination of problems
HELP
Call the service
A receiver turn on artifact (not a true MR signal) appears similarly like a FID signal artifact, except that they extend into the signal-free region, while the FID (a real MR signal) is confined to the projection of the sample along the readout axis.
mri safety guidance
Image Guidance
FID artifacts cannot occur on gradient echo images, but receiver turn on is still possible on gradient echoes.

See also FID Signal Artifact.

Ringing Artifact Reduction

Multiplication of acquired MR data by a function smoothly tapering off at higher spatial frequencies so as to reduce ringing artifacts near edges in the corresponding image or spectrum due to truncation and Gibbs phenomenon. It is a form of filtering.

Quick Overview
Please note that there are different common names for this artifact.
Artifact Information
NAME
Digitization noise, digitizer quantization, low dynamic range
DESCRIPTION
Noise
REASON
Finite voltage resolution of the digitizer
HELP
Larger range of sensitivity
Noise introduced into digitized signals by the finite voltage resolution of the digitizer.
You can see the effects of quantization if the noise level is smaller than the digitizer quantum. If the signal dynamic range is too great, the highest intensities from overloading the digitizer may result in the weaker features being lost in the digitization noise.
mri safety guidance
Image Guidance
This can be resolved by using an analog to digital converter with a larger range of sensitivity or by using techniques to reduce the dynamic range, e.g. suppressing the signal from water in order to detect the signal from less abundant compounds.
