An oral suspension of synthetic crystalline aqueous orange-flavored MRI contrast agent to enhance delineation of the bowel. Gadolite contains gadolinium, a lanthanide metal with paramagnetic characteristics. The toxic Gd is bound to become inert, along with water, inside a zeolite crystalline lattice structure. Gadolite gives a bright signal, and provides improved definition of the gastrointestinal tract from adjacent tissues.
Pharmacyclics receives an approvable letter from the FDA for Gadolite® Oral Suspension and in the United Kingdom an European marketing agreement signed with E-Z-Em, Ltd. in Dec. 1996.

GastroMARK® belongs to the negative oral contrast agents (same as Lumirem®, another brand name for ferumoxsil). GastroMARK® is used to distinguish the loops of the bowel from other abdominal structures and physiology. When GastroMARK® is ingested, it flows through and darkens the stomach and the small intestine in 30 to 45 minutes. By more clearly identifying the intestinal loops, GastroMARK® improves visualization of adjacent abdominal tissues such as the pancreas.

Rectal staging is necessary for the preoperative assessment of intra- and extramural tumor infiltration or the decision for adjuvant radio-chemotherapy. One indication of MRI with luminal contrast enhancement is small bowel enteroclysis after duodenal intubation for visualization of inflammatory bowel wall thickening and other complications.
"Double contrast" enhancement of the bowel lumen is the administration of plain water or water with methylcellulose along with heavily T2 weighted sequences or contrast enhanced T1 weighted sequences.
Several oral contrast agents have been used for small bowel MRI: Mannitol, metamucil, locust bean gum, and PEG. All provide sufficient bowel distension and homogeneity, but suffer from side effects such as diarrhea. The volume of PEG or mannitol administered must be not too large in order to achieve the best compromise between distension and acceptance by the patient.
MR colonography with positive bowel lumen enhancement requires higher concentrations of paramagnetic agents compared to the available dedicated enteral contrast agents, IV compounds are used to dope water enemas for this purpose.
Some investigators advocate negative bowel enhancement with Contrast Agents to suppress high signal bowel content in MRCP ( Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreaticography ). The use of a mixture of metamucil and 20 ml of gadolinium chelate provides good homogeneity and good tolerance without diarrhea.

The Gibbs or ringing artifact appears as a series of lines in the MR image parallel to abrupt and intense changes in the object at this location. This artifact does not occur visibly on smooth objects. This artifact is caused by the Gibbs phenomenon, an overshoot or ringing of Fourier series occurring at discontinuities.
In the spinal cord, a small syrinx can be simulated by the Gibbs phenomenon. Gibbs artifacts are also seen in other regions, for example the brain//skull interface.
Fine lines visible in an image may be due to undersampling of the high spatial frequencies, respectively incomplete digitization of the echo.
With more encoding steps the Gibbs artifacts is less intense and narrower. Therefore, e.g. the artifact is more intense in the 256 point dimension of a 256x512 acquisition matrix.

This problem can only be resolved by smoothing filters (LanczosSigmaFactor, 2-D Exponential Filtering, Gegenbauer Reconstruction etc.) or with a higher acquisition matrix and/or a smaller FOV, to smooth the object.

Current carrying coils designed to produce a desired magnetic field gradient (so that the magnetic field will be stronger in some locations than others).
Proper design of the size and configuration of the coils is necessary to produce a controlled and uniform gradient. Three paired orthogonal current-carrying coils located within the magnet that are designed to produce desired gradient magnetic fields, which collectively and sequentially are superimposed on the main magnetic field (B0) so that selective spatial excitation of the imaging volume can occur.
Gradients are also used to apply reversal pulses in some fast imaging techniques. Gradient coils in general vary the main magnetic field, so that each signal can be related to an exact location. The gradient coil configuration for the z-axis consists of e.g., Helmholtz pair coils, and of paired saddle coils for the x- and y-axis.
