(NACA) Some porphyrin (e.g. Gadophrin-2) and non-porphyrin (e.g. CEIII-60) paramagnetic chelates are able to specifically accumulate in nonviable tissues and can be applied as a MRI contrast agent for acute myocardial infarction and therapeutic necrosis. This function of necrosis avid contrast agents is a unique pathological targetability. These agents can also be exploited for multipurpose applications, because NACAs also bear other common properties including early systemic distribution, albumin binding, hepatocellular uptake and renal elimination.

(PARACEST) The alteration of the proton density or total water signal changes contrast and can be detected by the MRI scanner. Paramagnetic chemical exchange saturation transfer contrast agents are based upon the magnetization transfer mechanism.
Lanthanide ion complexes formed with tetra-amide based ligands display unusually slow water exchange kinetics and this feature may be used to alter image contrast by applying a selective presaturation pulse in an imaging sequence. This results in chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) from the lanthanide-bound water to bulk water thereby altering image contrast.
Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST) agents are a class of contrast agents that could potentially revolutionize the MRI field because of their improved sensitivity and can have a great impact on functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Protons in -CH2- groups, e.g., contained in fatty emulsions, mineral or vegetable oil or sucrose polyester, have a fast relaxation and short T1 time. These agents with short T1-relaxation, if used in gastrointestinal imaging, produce bright signal intensities in the intestine on T1 weighted sequences. Palatable oil emulsions can produce appropriate contrast opacification of the stomach as well as the small bowel, but caused by absorption in the distal small bowel these materials are not suitable for use in MRI colonoscopy.
