The MRI safety of cardiac stents is dependent of the material, the examined part of the body and the used field strength. A susceptibility artifact is expected also in low magnetic fields, but less.
mri safety guidance
MRI Safety Guidance
Most of the used materials are non-magnetic, for this case there is no risk for movement caused through the magnetic field. If the cardiac stent is outside the region of the radio frequency pulse, also the risk of e.g. heating is low.

Implants that involve magnets such as magnetic sphincters, stoma plugs, dental implants, etc., can be demagnetized by the MRI device. They should be removed prior to the examination.

MRI Safety Guidance
A particular danger is presented by small metallic surgical implants. Haemostatic or other clips in the CNS can move in their position. Dislocation by magnetic attraction or torque presents a risk in MRI examinations. There is a minimal risk in other parts of the body, because after the healing phase of six to eight weeks, fibrosis and encasement of the clip help to keep it in a stable position.
The label stainless steel is not a guarantee for non-ferromagnetic steel.

Advantages of low field imaging are the small-sized 5 Gauss fringe field and therefore the less static magnetic field exposure for the surrounding area, as well as less contraindications causing lower risks for the MRI safety by implemented metal and magnetic devices and equipment.
Low field systems are sometimes for restricted use, e.g. dedicated extremity scanner or open MRI devices. Open MRI devices equipped with permanent magnets are well-suited for MR guided interventions because these machines combine the lower magnetic fields of this type of magnets and the better patient access of open MRI scanner.
In some cases, the contrast of different tissues is better at lower field strength, depending on their T1 or T2 relaxation times. The disadvantage of the lower signal to noise ratio are a poor resolution and a longer scan time for a good image quality.

The interactions between the most tested heart valve prostheses and the magnetic field of MRI devices are of no significance. However, there are many different types of heart valve prostheses and in the particular case their MRI safety should be checked.
mri safety guidance
MRI Safety Guidance
Prosthetic heart valves, depending on the type and the material, are not necessarily considered to be dangerous in fields up to 3T. Patients should not undergo high field MRI examinations if valve dehiscence is clinically suspected.

The national regulatory boards decided to limit the threshold for access to MRI areas to 5 gauss.

MRI Safety Guidance
It is of special interest for the observer of bureaucratic procedures that the 5 gauss safety limit is ten times higher than the average earth magnetic field, but lower than the magnetic field in electric trains such as subways (up to 7 gauss). For example, the fields measured on the surface of the receiver of a telephone are 35 gauss and of an audio headset 100 gauss.
