the PoleStar™ N-10 is a compact, mobile MRI scanner that mounts to a standard operating room table. The magnets raise into position for imaging, but lower to make surgery easier, and the low magnetic field makes it possible to use many conventional surgical instruments.
When not in use, the PoleStar™ is stored in a nearby closet that allows the room to be used for conventional surgical procedures. The PoleStar™ N-10 is supplied with a fully integrated image guidance system that utilizes intraoperatively acquired images.
The successor, the new PoleStar™ N20 sets a new standard in intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging.

Quadrature Detection
 
Quadrature detection is used in magnetic resonance imaging as well as in Doppler ultrasound and is also called quadrature demodulation or phase quadrature technique.
With this phase sensitive demodulation technique the complex demodulated signal is separated into two components. One is called the real channel; the second part is called the imaginary channel and is located 90° away from the real channel. The signals from both channels are combined to produce a single set of quadrature detected real and imaginary spectra. In MRI, the parts of the demodulated MR signal are further processed by Fourier transformation analysis. All information on the MR signal components e.g. amplitude, phase, and frequency is given by this quadrature detection combined with Fourier analysis.

Relaxivity
 
The ability of magnetic compounds to increase the relaxation rates of the surrounding water proton spins.
Relaxivity is used to improve the contrast of the image, and to study tissue specific areas where the contrast agent better diffuses or to perform functional magnetic resonance imaging.
The relaxivity of MRI contrast agents depends on the molecular structure and kinetic of the complex. To increase the number of water molecules that are in the inner sphere of the complex, or to slow down the molecular rotational correlation time, are possibilities to improve the water relaxivity.
Relaxivity units (r1, r2) are mM-1 * sec-1 (at varying temperatures).

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine is a noninvasive procedure to evaluate different types of tissue, including the spinal cord, vertebral disks and spaces between the vertebrae through which the nerves travel, as well as distinguish healthy tissue from diseased tissue.
The cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine MRI should be scanned in individual sections. The scan protocol parameter like e.g. the field of view (FOV), slice thickness and matrix are usually different for cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine MRI, but the method is similar. The standard views in the basic spinal MRI scan to create detailed slices (cross sections) are sagittal T1 weighted and T2 weighted images over the whole body part, and transverse (e.g. multi angle oblique) over the region of interest with different pulse sequences according to the result of the sagittal slices. Additional views or different types of pulse sequences like fat suppression, fluid attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) or diffusion weighted imaging are created dependent on the indication.

Indications:
Neurological deficit, evidence of radiculopathy, cauda equina compression
Primary tumors or drop metastases
Infection/inflammatory disease, multiple sclerosis
Postoperative evaluation of lumbar spine: disk vs. scar
Evaluation of syrinx
Localized back pain with no radiculopathy (leg pain)

Contrast enhanced MRI techniques delineate infections vs. malignancies, show a syrinx cavity and support to differentiate the postoperative conditions. After surgery for disk disease, significant fibrosis can occur in the spine. This scarring can mimic residual disk herniation. Magnetic resonance myelography evaluates spinal stenosis and various intervertebral discs can be imaged with multi angle oblique techniques. Cine series can be used to show true range of motion studies of parts of the spine. Advanced open MRI devices are developed to perform positional scans in the position of pain or symptom (e.g. Upright™ MRI formerly Stand-Up MRI).
