The paramagnetic water-soluble metallofullerenes (Gd-fullerenols), which have strong T1 shortening effect, can be used as a novel core material of MRI contrast agents. Gadolinium endohedral metallofullerenes have been synthesized as polyhydroxyl forms (Gd@C82(OH)n, Gd-fullerenes) with the evaluation of their paramagnetic properties. The modification to the water-soluble forms is essential for the biomedical application of the metallofullerenes. The in vitro water proton relaxivity, R1 (the effect on 1/T1), of Gd-fullerenes is significantly higher (20-folds) than that of commercial MRI contrast agents - e.g. Gd-DTPA.

Creation of images of objects such as the body by use of the nuclear magnetic resonance phenomenon. The immediate practical application involves imaging the distribution of hydrogen nuclei (protons) in the body. The image brightness in a given region depends on the spin density and the relaxation times, with their relative importance determined by the particular imaging technique employed. Image brightness is also affected by motion such as blood flow.

An intrinsic property of certain nuclei that gives them an associated characteristic angular momentum and magnetic moment also known as inherent spin (those with odd numbers of protons and/or neutrons in their nucleus). Nuclei that do not exhibit this characteristic will not produce a NMR signal.

Water and fat signals being in or out of phase result from the FFE method and the slight difference in resonance frequencies of the protons. It can cause black "outlining" of tissues and decrease in signal from voxel containing both water and fat. At 1.5 T, the water and fat signal are in phase when TE is an even multiple, and out of phase when TE is an odd multiple of 2.3 ms.
1.5T: OUT of PHASE = 2.3, 6.9, 11.5, 16.1, 20.7 ms
1.0T: OUT of PHASE = 3.5, 10.4, 17.3, 24.2 ms
0.5T: OUT of PHASE = 6.9, 20.7 ms
