Lung ImagingMRI Resource Directory:
 - Lung Imaging -

Lung imaging is furthermore a challenge in MRI because of the predominance of air within the lungs and associated susceptibility issues as well as low signal to noise of the inflated lung parenchyma. Cardiac and respiratory triggered or breath hold sequences allow diagnostic imaging, however a comparable image quality with computed tomography is still difficult to achieve.
Assumptions for lung MRI:
•
Low signal to noise ratio of the inherently low lung proton density.
•
Cardiac and respiratory motion artifacts.
•
Magnetic susceptibility effects of large magnetic field gradients.
•
Very short transverse relaxation times and significant diffusion yielding short T2 (30-70 msec), short T2* (1-3 msec), and additional long T1 relaxation times (1300-1500 msec).
•
The extreme short T2 values are responsible for a fast signal decay during a single shot readout, resulting in blurring.

The current trends in MRI are the use of new imaging technologies and increasingly powerful magnetic fields. Among these technologies are parallel imaging techniques as well as ventilation agents like hyperpolarized helium for the use as an inert inhalational contrast agent to study lung ventilation properties. With hyperpolarized gases clear images of the lungs can be obtained without using a large magnetic field (see also back projection imaging). Single shot sequences (e.g. TSE or Half Fourier Acquisition Single Shot Turbo Spin Echo HASTE) used in lung MR imaging benefits from parallel imaging techniques due to reduced relaxation time effects during the echo train and therefore reduced image blurring as well as reduced motion artifacts.
In the future, more effective contrast agents may provide an alternative solution to the need for high field MRI. Dynamic contrast enhanced MRI perfusion has demonstrated a potential in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism or to characterize lung cancer and mediastinal tumors. 3D contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography of the thoracic vessel.

MR myelography is studying the spinal canal and subarachnoid space by high-resolution MRI with a technique in which a sequence with strong T2 weighting is used to provide high contrast between the "dark" spinal cord and its nerves and the surrounding "bright" cerebrospinal fluid. MR myelography as part of an entire MR examination has virtually replaced X-ray myelography. Used sequences are T2 weighted fast spin echo pulse sequences or a refocused gradient echo pulse sequence with strong T2 weighting.

DESCRIPTION

Interferences
HELP
Surface coil, shimming
A moiré pattern is an interference pattern created for example when two grids are overlaid at an angle, or when they have slightly different mesh sizes. The human visual system creates an imaginary pattern of roughly horizontal dark and light bands, the moiré pattern that appears to be superimposed on the lines.
In MRI, the appearance of moiré fringes can be caused by a variety of reasons e.g., inhomogeneity of the main magnetic field caused by a defect shielding (interference with RF pulses), interferences produced by aliasing, and interferences of echoes from different excitation modes (with different echo times).

Image Guidance
Take spin echo-based techniques, or a surface coil. This artifact is often sensitive to shimming or susceptibility gradients.

An image in which the signal from two spectral components (such as fat and water) is 180° out of phase and leads to destructive interference in a voxel.
Since fat precesses slower than water, based on their chemical shift, their signals will decay and precess in the transverse plane at different frequencies. When the phase of the TE becomes opposed (180°), their combined signal intensities subtract with each other in the same voxel, producing a signal void or dark band at the fat/water interface of the tissues being examined.
Opposed phase gradient echo imaging for the abdomen is a lipid-type tissue sensitive sequence particularly for the liver and adrenal glands, which puts a signal intensity around abnormal water-based tissues or lesions that are fatty. Due to the increased sensitivity of opposed phase, the tissue visualization increases the lesion-to-liver contrast and exhibits more signal intensity loss in tissues containing small amounts of lipids compared to a spin echo T1 with fat suppression. Using an opposed phase gradient echo also provides the ability to differentiate various pathologies in the brain, including lipids, methaemoglobin, protein, calcifications and melanin.
