(SMART) The acronym for slice specific, multi angle, multi resolution, multi thickness scanning. This function allows the operator to individually customize the thickness, field of view and position of each slice in a multi angle study.

Quick Overview
DESCRIPTION
Loss of signal
HELP
Overlapping prevention
The slice overlap artifact is another name for crosstalk artifact. If slices of multislice acquisitions are overlapping, the spinning nuclei belonging to more than one slice getting multiple times saturated, which leads to signal loss in this areas.

Acquisition of data whose views cover a spiral in k-space. It is accomplished by applying an oscillatory gradient, which increases in amplitude as a function of time.

Quick Overview
DESCRIPTION
Staircase like nuance
REASON
Slices too thick, no overlapping
Staircase artifacts might be seen in projection of the slice thickness in case of MIP or MPR reconstructions.
Image Guidance
Use overlapping slices to reduce this artifact by changing the slice gap to a negative value. In most cases, a negative value of 20-30% is sufficient. | | | | • View the DATABASE results for 'Staircase Artifact' (2).

Quick Overview
This artifact is uncommon with modern MRI equipment, but possible. It can occur if there are bad memory locations or bad connectors in the parallel data bus of the computer.
Image Guidance
This artifact is the result of a hardware failure and must be addressed by a service representative. | | | | | Further Reading: | News & More:
