Beside diluted contrast agents, you can use fat containing substances, for example fish-oil filled capsules.

Some experiments with superparamagnetic contrast agents such as Feridex/Endorem with labeled cells showed a black appearance on T2 weighted sequences, which was easy to see. The less dominant T1 effect, bright on T1 weighted images was more subtle. Is Gado listed as a contrast agent or a medicine under the FDA? Is it legal for an mri technologist to inject gado? I know we can inject contrast agents but is gado listed under the FDA as a contrast agent or is it listed as something else?

The contrast agent causes this difference. Contrast agents reduce the T1 time in tissues where they have accumulated depending on blood flow and vascular permeability. Caused by this, tissues after an application of contrast agents will differ in shortening of the T1 time, and the same imaging parameters result in other image appearance.
